Summer Letter

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Dear 3B Students and Parents,

It has really been a pleasure to get to know and work with you all this year. Each child has grown in many ways this year, which is a joy to see.

We do not have required summer homework in the third grade, but I would encourage every student to do some reading, writing and math work over the summer. Students have brought home their diaries which they might consider continuing over the summer, as I am sure they all have lots going on!  Reading is a great way to continue building language skills as well.

Students should practice their times tables, to try to know all of them up to twelve, as well as the corresponding division facts (a helpful extension is to know the 25’s and 15’s as well). It is important that students know what the facts mean (repeated addition, arrays, etc.) but quick recall will be very helpful as the concepts become more difficult. Flashcards are great and easy to make! I would encourage you to make math a part of everyday life with such things as elapsed time, money and making change, measuring with distance, cooking, etc.

Mathletics and Spelling City will also be available all summer and I will periodically check in. If there are any problems with them, please send me an email, which I will also check from time to time.

Thank you again for a lovely year and a lovely gift!  I have already loaded up the Kindle with lots of books to read over the summer. I wish you all a wonderful, safe and restful summer and all the best next year!
