On the assessment:

addtion and subtraction:

  • basic facts
  • carrying and borrowing also with money (the decimal point lined up)
  • adding to 100 and 1000 (73 + ______ = 100) and (650 + ___________ = 1000)

ordering numbers
greater than, less than and equal to
numbers on a number line
rounding to the nearest 10
multiplying and dividing by 10 ( ex. 338 x 10 or 2100 divided by 10....always a number where they just have to add or take away a zero)
2-step word problems
grams and kilograms (knowing that 3657 grams = 3 kg 657 g because 1kg = 1000 g)
compass directions (n, s, w, e, nw, ne, sw, se)

Field Trip to INGV, February 4, 2011



Shaking to make the seismograph work


Pushing hard on the land to show what can happen in an earthquake

The model Earth with the plates that the children had to put back together.
In the background there is another model we saw that showed the geological processes that can lead to earthquakes and volcanoes

We also had a presentation. saw a short film about volcanoes and go to go into the room where the scientist monitor all of the earthquakes in Italy and its neighbors.

Language Arts

Spelling – The suffixes -able and –ible

Rules:

1. A suffix is a group of letters added at the end of a word to change its meaning.

2. The suffixes –able and –ible mean “able to be” and are usually adjectives.

3. For a word that ends in e, drop the e before adding the suffix

4. There are exceptions to this rule such as : changeable, knowledgeable and noticeable
